Container Exchange Point Donations
Townsville City Council has partnered with Containers for Change to launch a trial of container exchange points on public bins across Townsville. These new pay it forward stations allow charities, community groups and individuals to collect containers and return them for a 10c refund.
Container Exchange Points
Where to Donate
Donate and collect empties from these container exchange points locations across the city:
- Flinders Street
- Ogden Street
- Stanley Street
- Sturt Street
- The Strand
- Victoria Bridge
- Walker Street.
Visit the Containers for Change website for all locations in Townsville to cash in your containers for a 10c refund.
Accepted Containers
The following containers are accepted:
- aluminium
- glass
- plastic
- steel
- liquid paperboard beverage containers.
Check the 10c refund mark on the container if you’re unsure!
Items not Accepted
The following items are not accepted:
- coffee cups
- plain milk containers
- concentrated cordial containers.
If it doesn’t have the 10c refund mark, it needs to go in the general waste bin.
Recycling on the Go
Research has shown that 86% of people report recycling at home but only 48% of people recycle when out and about. This means that most people want to do the right thing and recycle, provided it is convenient.
An audit of our waste and recycling bins along The Strand estimate that each year more than 140,000 eligible 10c containers are placed into the waste bins, destined for landfill.
By placing empty eligible drink containers into the collection exchange points, residents and visitors can pay it forward by allowing others in the community to collect their 10c containers.
Not only does this increase resource recovery and encourage recycling behaviours outside of the home but offers an opportunity for residents to cash in some extra money through Containers for Change exchange points.
