A smart way to park

Townsville City Council introduced new smart meter technology in January 2023 to make parking easier. The rollout included two types of solar-powered meters: coin, card, and app-operated meters for 2P parking spots, and card-operated meters with a 17cm colour touch screen LED display for selected 2P spots, as well as all 4P and 8P parking spots.

The smart meter technology uses vehicle number plates as identifiers, eliminating the need for printed tickets. Additionally, 15 minutes of free parking is available in all 2P spots, either as a standalone session or as a grace period after payment. The “Townsville Parking” app also allows residents to pay for parking without visiting the meter.

Townsville offers a variety of parking facilities, from 15-minute free parking to 8-hour paid all-day parking, with regulated hours from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, unless signed otherwise. Time limits apply.
