Townsville Parking App
Make your shopping, celebrations and catch-ups in the Townsville city centre easier this Christmas with free two-hour parking for the month of December.
Park in any spot marked with a 2P sign and get two hours of free parking, with no need to use the meter or the Townsville Parking app.
Free two-hour parking in the city centre runs throughout December 2024 in all 2P parking spaces. Time restrictions apply.
Parking fees still apply for all 4P and 8P parking spaces.
The Townsville Parking App allows users to pay for their parking without needing to go to the meter. This smart technology works by using each vehicle’s number plate as its identifier, removing the need for printed tickets to be displayed on vehicles.
With the Townsville Parking app you can:
- view parking rates and details
- navigate to car park zones
- start and stop your parking session
- pay for your parking.
All these features in the one place – the smart way to park!
Download the Townsville Parking app:
Regulated parking is in place:
- City (other than The Strand): Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, unless signed otherwise
- The Strand: 7 days 9am to 5pm, unless signed otherwise.
Using the Townsville Parking App
Setting up the App and Your Account
To set up the Townsville Parking app:
- download the Townsville Parking app from the App Store or Google Play
- set up your account profile by providing:
- your user details (name and phone)
- your payment details (Visa credit, Mastercard credit, or debit card)
- your vehicle information (licence plate, registered country and state, vehicle type)
- check your email for a confirmation that will need to be accepted before you can receive your emailed receipt.
If you have entered the wrong email address, this is unable to be changed and you will need to reinstall the app and start the process over with the correct email.
Finding a Park
To search for a particular zone before parking, you can:
- open the Townsville Parking app
- from the Find a Park tab pinch outwards on the screen to zoom in on the area you want to find a park
- select the coloured area (zone) of the street you want to park in
- the zone details should appear
- select the Directions button to be taken to your device's maps app for navigation.
Starting a Parking Session
Once you park your car, ensure you ‘start’ a parking session to avoid an infringement. You cannot reserve the parking space in advance.
To start a parking session:
- open the Townsville Parking app
- from the Find a Park tab, select locate (circle crosshair icon) to show where you are on the map
- pinch outwards on the screen to zoom in on your location on the map
- select the coloured area (zone) of the street you have parked in
- the zone details should appear, confirm this is the zone in which you would like to park and
- select the Pay button
- ensure you have selected the correct vehicle and payment method (if you have multiple registered)
- select Next
- select Start Session.
How a Parking Session Works
Once you start a session, the app will show you how long you have been parked.
You have a 3 minute grace period to 'stop' your session before you will need to pay, allowing you a few minutes to change your mind if you have made an error.
15minutes of free parking is included in your session but won’t be reflected on the session end time. Be aware that enforcement will still occur after the extended 15 minute grace period has expired. If you only require free parking for 15 minutes, please use a meter.
The session continues until either:
- you stop the session
- the session time reaches the maximum period allowed in that area.
Your parking timer never exceeds the maximum parking time in the area you choose and you do not get an alert when time runs out, so ensure you park within the maximum allowed time to avoid receiving an infringement.
If you want to continue parking in the city past the signed time restriction, you will need to move your car. Stop your session when you move your car and start a new session once you are parked at your new location.
Stopping a Parking Session
When you return to the car you ‘stop’ your session:
- on the Zone tab, you should see your Parking Session
- select Stop Session.
Payment and Rates
Payment via the app is only made once the session ends (either after you press 'stop', or when you reach the maximum time allowed in that zone). You will be charged only for the time you were parked until the session ended.
It is possible to pay with a Visa credit, Mastercard credit, or debit card.
When you have completed your parking session, a copy of the tax invoice will be sent to your registered email address. If you have made a new account, ensure you have verified your email address before the end of your parking session to avoid delays.
If you have insufficient funds when your session is stopped, the app will attempt to charge you again in 24 hours. You will not be able to start another session on the app until the previous session has been paid.
Parking Rates (Townsville Parking App)
Increments in how your parking is charged are different between the meters and the app.
There is a minimum charge of $1 on your card, and then:
- 2P – cost increases by 50 cents every 15 minutes. 2 hours is $4.
- 4P – cost increases by $1 every half-hour. 4 hours is $8.
- 8P – cost increases by $1 every half-hour, up to a maximum of $10 for anything over 5 hours and 30 minutes. 8 hours is $10.
Updating Your Information

You can update your details at any time. To do so:
- select Profile
- select My Account
- update your User Details or Payment Options.
You are unable to update the email address attached to your account. If your email address has changed you will need to reinstall the app and start a new account with the new email address.
Update Your Vehicles
To change or add additional vehicles to your account choose Manage Vehicles, and then select:
- Profile
- My Account
- Manage Vehicles, and then either:
- the pencil icon to edit your vehicle details including licence plate
- Add Vehicle to add additional vehicles.
You can enter multiple vehicles for selection through the app.
Ensure you select the correct vehicle when starting a parking session.
Council require access to and use of licence plate numbers for compliance purposes. We can determine payments and infringements by linking the licence plate number with the payment technology, rather than walking from car to car to observe such transactions. Whenever an infringement occurs, it must be accompanied by a licence plate number.
