Parking Rules
This page contains some of the rules we have for parking your vehicles in Townsville, which assist with the safety and flow of our streets. Some areas such as within Townsville City, and some event parking situations have additional rules. Outside of Townsville City, most parking is not regulated as long as you have parked in a way which is within laws and rules around parking.
About Parking Rules
Parking rules covered on this page are:
- obstructing a footpath or driveway
- parking near or across a driveway
- parking on both sides of the road.
For more information around parking and driving rules visit the Transport and Main Roads website.
Obstructing a Footpath or Driveway
Under Queensland Government legislation (Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Road Rules) Regulation 2009 – Division 6, section 198), a driver must not stop on a footpath, shared path, dividing strip/nature strip, on or adjacent to a length of road, unless official traffic signage approves parking in that location. This also includes the section of the driveway outside your property boundary. This will not only save you from any pesky fines but also keeps our neighbourhoods safe for pedestrians.
Parking is illegal on nature strips, footpaths and across kerb ramps.
Parking Near or Across a Driveway
According to the Queensland Road Rules, motorists must not park across a driveway. However, how close a motorist can park to a driveway is not stipulated.
If you can enter and exit your property using your driveway, even if difficult, the parked car is likely to be parked legally and no enforcement action can be taken.
Parking on Both Sides of the Road
Motorists can park on both sides of the road but must leave at least three metres of clear roadway between their vehicle and other parked vehicles, dividing strips, traffic islands or unbroken dividing lines.
Where no signs are erected in a two-way street, vehicles must park parallel to the left side of the street.
