Welcoming Cities

Townsville City Council has become the 40th Council and the 5th Queensland Council to join the Welcoming Cities network. This commitment is aligned with achieving one of six key initiatives outlined in the Townsville City Deal for an ‘Innovated and Connected City’.

Welcoming Cities is a national initiative that supports Local Governments to achieve their social cohesion objectives. Townsville City Council is a member of a network of councils and other organisations which share knowledge, create partnerships and celebrate success in the interest of increasing social cohesion. Welcoming Cities currently has 89 members representing 50% of the Australian population.

Council will be working towards achieving the Welcoming Cities Standard and will champion the principles of welcoming and inclusion in our local community.

Townsville City Council is now a Committed Welcoming City and will work to achieve further accreditations through the network.

Welcoming Week 2024

Welcoming Week, 13 – 22 September 2024, is an annual campaign that celebrates communities that strive to be more welcoming to all people, including migrants, refugees, people seeking asylum and international students. It is a week to celebrate the values that unite us, and to make our communities more welcoming to all those who call Townsville home.

The 2024 Welcoming Week theme, #WhatBringsUsTogether, is a moment to consider and celebrate the work of advancing a welcoming Australia that happens in communities across the country every single day.
