Story: Iconic Townsville location turns 20!
On Saturday 19 October 2019, we celebrated The Strand’s 20th birthday in collaboration with Star 106.3’s Fire in the Sky event.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said it’s incredible to think about how The Strand has transformed the city over the past two decades.
“The Strand was such a transformative project for the city, and it has become a premium destination for locals and visitors in the city,” Cr Hill said.
“Our vision is to maintain the momentum of enhancing facilities along The Strand and Council is determining whether or not the lagoon will be feasible on The Strand and if so, where.
“The Strand has been an iconic Townsville location and I’m thrilled we can give it a celebration it deserves.”
The Strand was opened in 1999 by former Townsville Mayor Tony Mooney after Tropical Cyclone Sid damaged the foreshore the year before.
Former Townsville City Mayor Tony Mooney said The Strand is one of Townsville's biggest achievements during his time in public office.
“The concept for The Strand was born in a hallway conversation and it instead turned into a legacy of my time in office and so much more than a piece of infrastructure,” Mr Mooney said.
“The Strand has had such a major impact on the city, and I think it really gave us all something to be proud of.
“I know there has been some recent development proposals along The Strand, and I hope that confidence keeps building and we see even more and more people visit this wonderful asset.”
