Townsville singers to play an instrumental role in Carols celebrations

Townsville vocalists could play a key role in the city’s annual Carols by Candlelight celebrations this December with Council calling for up to 80 people to be part of the community choir.

Councillor Brady Ellis said the choir plays an instrumental role in the annual celebrations, performing in front of thousands of people at Riverway Oval each year.

“For all those closet carollers, this is your opportunity to get on the stage and perform in front of up to 20,000 people,” Cr Ellis said.

“Our Carols by Candlelight Celebrations are always such a highlight for our community, but being involved in making this special night come to life really is something else.

“We really encourage those who’d love to be a part of the amazing show to visit What’s On and register your interest, not only is it a chance to have your voice heard, but a terrific opportunity to meet new people.”

Choir Director, and prominent figure in Townsville’s musical theatre scene, Rachel Cairns said she was excited to see new faces and voices join the choir in 2024.

“I have had the pleasure of directing the Townsville Choral Society Carols by Candlelight Choir for almost 20 years now, and while there are familiar faces that return each year, it’s always amazing seeing new people come along to join the fun,” Ms Cairns said.

“We’re really encouraging of new people joining the choir, you don’t have to be an amazing vocalist, just someone who can hold a note and is keen to get in on the fun.

“We’ll have weekly rehearsals from 24 October right up until the big day in December, so there’s plenty of time to tune any rusty chords.”

Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson said Carols was a much-loved community event dating back more than 75 years.

“There’s no event that brings our community together like carols,” Cr Thompson said.

“Not only is it a fantastic way to cheer in the festive season, but cheer on a huge amount of terrific local talent giving it their all up on stage.

“We’re also calling on any pre-show acts to register now, whether it be a dance school or a local up-and-coming artist, this is your chance to join the festivities and perform in front of thousands of our community.”
