Get Ready Townsville to help residents plan prepare and act

Date published: 31 October 2024

Plan, prepare and act to keep yourself and your home safe by heading to this weekend’s Get Ready Townsville event at Jezzine Barracks.

The free community event offers a wide range of stallholders to help residents prepare for North Queensland’s monsoon and cyclone season.

Townsville Local Disaster Management Group chairperson Andrew Robinson said Get Ready Townsville was a must-attend event for Townsville residents.

“Townsville’s wet season often brings heavy rains and can also bring cyclones, as we saw earlier this year with Cyclone Kirrily. This is why it’s so important to have a plan, be prepared and be ready to act in the face of high-risk weather,” Cr Robinson said.

“Get Ready Townsville will have exhibitors like SES, the Queensland Fire Department and Townsville City Council who will be able to give you tips for how to prepare and information on what happens if there’s a cyclone or a flood.

“Disasters can happen very quickly, which is why it’s important to be adequately prepared so you, your family and your home are as safe as possible.

“We have many new residents choosing to live in Townsville each year, so I’d particularly encourage our new residents to head along to get a better understanding of what it means to live in the dry tropics during the wet season and how to get ready.”

Queensland Police Service Superintendent Chris Lawson says now is not the time to be complacent leading into the severe weather season.

“Now is the time to put steps in place to ensure your family and your property are safe during the next extreme weather event,” Superintendent Lawson said.

“Emergency crews will work diligently to protect the community in times of disaster, but preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. I’d encourage the community to take the opportunity to access the Get Ready Queensland website and follow the proactive steps to know your risk, make a plan and pack an emergency kit.”

Get Ready Townsville runs from 9am to midday on Sunday at Jezzine Barracks.
