Date published: 5 June 2024
Prior to today’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Mayor Troy Thompson requested a leave of absence, pending the outcome of all investigations relating to him, which was approved unanimously by the Council today.
During this period, Deputy Mayor Paul Jacob will be the Acting Mayor.
The Council has resolved to remove the Mayor as the Chairperson of all Council meetings, in line with amended rule 6.5.1 of the Code of Meeting Practice Policy. Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney has been appointed as the Chairperson for all Council meetings.
The Council also resolved that:
- The Council does not have confidence in the Mayor
- The Council requests the Mayor to resign his position
- The Mayor be removed as Council’s representative on all bodies, committees and boards unless the Mayor’s representation or membership is required by law.
Council’s CEO writes to the CEO of the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works regarding the conduct and character of the Mayor and his fitness for the office of Mayor, and request that they consider recommending to the Minister as soon as possible to take remedial action to either suspend the Mayor, pending the outcome of investigations into his conduct, or dismiss the Mayor.
