Severe Tropical Cyclone Kirrily has crossed the Queensland coast just north of Townsville.
The Category 3 system will move further inland and bring with it gusts of up to 170km/h.
Sustained wind of more than 100km/h have impacted the region from 6pm.
Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) Chair Jenny Hill said it was important locals stay indoors, listen for advice and remain safe.
“More than 30,000 homes are without power and more will be impacted as the system makes its way inland,” Cr Hill said.
“Trees are down across the city and we expect multiple properties to be damaged.
“It is important people stay indoors in the strongest and safest part of their building.
“Stay away from big windows, listen to your radios and if you’re able to stay informed through the Emergency Management and Disaster Dashboard.
“It could take several hours for the system to pass and its important you stay in a safe place until you are told it is safe to leave.
“The wind will be very loud, you could hear things breaking outside and hitting your house and you could lose access to power, your phone and internet.
“The TLDMG will continue to monitor the situation closely and update the community with any relevant information.”
