Services begin reopening in Townsville, pets available to reclaim
Date published: 28 January 2024
Pet owners whose animals were lost during the crossing and aftermath of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily can now reclaim their pets from Townsville City Council’s Animal Care and Adoption Centre (ACAC).
The centre is open from 9am to 1pm today and from 9am to 3:30pm on Monday for pet owners to reclaim their pets, or for pets that have been found by residents to be taken in.
TLDMG Chair Jenny Hill said the Animal Care and Adoption Centre would return to normal operations, including adoptions, on Tuesday.
“If you’re missing a pet, please head to the ACAC to reclaim them,” Cr Hill said.
Council is also opening a number of its facilities from Monday, including Citylibraries Flinders Street, Citylibraries Riverway and Townsville Stadium.
Citylibraries Aitkenvale will be closed until further notice due to damage from the cyclone.
Townsville City Galleries’ Pinnacles Gallery and Perc Tucker Regional Gallery will remain closed as exhibition re-installs are undertaken.
Riverway’s lagoons have reopened today.
Kokoda Memorial Pool is currently closed pending the return of power, and Northern Beaches Leisure Centre will reopen tomorrow.
The Rockpool, The Strand Water Park, Tobruk Memorial Baths and Long Tan Memorial Pool are currently closed, pending the return of power.
Townsville’s three botanical gardens are currently closed as Council teams work through cleaning them up (including removing green waste and making it safe for the community to re-enter).
