Algal bloom detected at Keyatta, Curralea lakes
Date published: 14 February 2024
Council’s routine water quality testing program has detected an algal bloom in Curralea and Keyatta lakes near Castletown Shopping Centre.
Algal blooms are a common occurrence in tropical waterways and can cause skin irritation and make pets sick if they drink the water.
Council has erected signage around the lakes advising residents to avoid direct contact with the water.
Council has applied safe treatment to the waterways to help generate natural balance, suppress odour and help maintain a healthy water system.
People and pets should stay away from the water and any fish caught should not be consumed.
Council will continue to monitor the bloom.
