TLDMG moves to alert amid rain, flooding

Date published: 20 December 2024

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) has been stood up amid heavy rainfall and localised flooding across Townsville.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised of heavy, locally intense rainfall that is forecast to continue today and on Saturday morning.

TLDMG Chair Andrew Robinson said the decision to move to alert was made this afternoon.

“Townsville residents are used to heavy rainfall, however with the Bureau’s advice of heavy and intense rainfall throughout today and tomorrow we want residents to be as prepared as possible,” Cr Robinson said.

“As this rain continues and localised flooding increases we need all residents to stay safe.

“Prepare now by going through your emergency plan with your household, having your emergency kit ready and being prepared to leave if required. If anyone in your household has a medical condition make sure their medication is in your emergency kit.

“Water is rising steadily in our rivers and creeks, particularly the Ross River and the Bohle River, so please be aware of flooding if you are nearby.

“Remember, it’s flooded, forget it. Do not drive through flood waters. Do not put your life at risk.”

The TLDMG is encouraging residents to ensure their homes are secured with windows and doors closed.

Cr Robinson said sand to fill sandbags would be available at four locations.

“Sand will be available from 3pm at Lou Litster Park, the Bluewater Community Centre, the Cungulla Community Centre and the corner of Mount Low Parkway and the Bruce Highway at Mount Low,” he said.

“Please bring your own sandbags.”

The Ross River is closed to all sports and recreation use, with re-opening dependent on weather. Updates will be published on Council’s website.
