Find family fun with Townsville’s Children’s Book Week activities

Date published: 16 August 2024

Discover the magic of stories with the whole family this Children’s Book Week at Townsville Citylibraries.

Children’s Book Week is an initiative of The Children’s Book Council of Australia. To celebrate, Citylibraries will be hosting a series of fun free activities from this Saturday, 17 August, through to Friday 23 August to celebrate the theme reading is magic.

Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said Children’s Book Week was the perfect time to encourage children to foster a love for reading.

“Literacy is a very important part of a child’s development and success, which is why it’s important to engage your children with reading from a young age,” Cr Greaney said.

“Townsville Citylibraries runs programs throughout the year to encourage our city’s young readers, and they’re taking it to the next level with this year’s Children’s Book Week.

“Some of the activities in store at our libraries include storytimes, painting at The Studio, song times and messy play in the park, which all help foster a love for literacy.

“During the week you’ll be able to dress up with costumes from the library’s collection, grab a magic hat and walk the red carpet at all of our Citylibraries branches or try on magic hats and have fun making a craft project while visiting our mobile library.

“Our Children’s Book Week activities will be held at our libraries at Riverway and Aitkenvale, as well as at Bushland Beach Park and Rupertswood Park. To find out which activity suits your family best, check out the event listing on our What’s On Townsville website.”
