Artists invited to enter Ephemera 2025: Trace-less

Date published: 23 August 2024

Artists can now enter into one of Australia’s largest public art festivals for the chance to win one of four major prizes.

Townsville City Council is proud to bring Ephemera 2025: Trace-less to The Strand from 19 July  to 03 August next year for its 13th iteration.

Ephemera is drawing a stronger focus on sustainability in 2025, encouraging artists to be mindful of connection to Country, the creative use of materials and environmental impact when creating their works.

This new focus includes a new prize structure, with a $10,000 Artistic Excellence Award, and $1000 each for the People’s Choice Award and the Environmental Advocate Award, as well as the newly introduced $1000 Young Artistic Excellence Award.

Councillor Liam Mooney said artists should apply now to exhibit in the renowned temporary public art festival.

“These prizes will recognise the high calibre of sculptural work entered into the competition and encourage young and emerging artists to participate in one of the country’s most well-known public art festivals,” Cr Mooney said.

“The ephemeral nature of these works are what make them so special. Some of our best-loved Ephemera artworks from years past include Wooden Deity by Daniel Popper and Dichotomy from Sandstorm Events, showcasing the unique qualities of ephemeral materials like wood, sand and light.

“I’m always excited to see what imaginative and exciting works are entered into Ephemera, and this year is no different. Artists, including school groups, have until November 5 to enter into Ephemera 2025: Trace-less.

“Successful works will be on display along Townsville’s premier beachfront at The Strand for a two-week exhibition as part of Council’s commitment to culture and community services.”

Ephemera 2023: Seaside Sculptures drew more than 260,000 visitors during its fortnight-long exhibition period, making it one of the city’s most-attended events.

Ephemera is proudly organised and coordinated by Townsville City Council, with the valuable support of a dedicated volunteer taskforce.
