Brisbane artist makes Townsville return with PTRG exhibition

Brisbane-based artist Bruce Reynolds is making his return to Townsville with his touring exhibition How Soon Is Now?
The sculptor and collage artist last came to Townsville as an invited artist in Strand Ephemera with Wing Defense, his sea-facing lamassu, an ancient mythological creature with a human head, a bull’s body and an eagle’s wings.
Now he is preparing for the opening of How Soon Is Now? on Friday night which features both sculptural and collage pieces in his first showing at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery.
Reynolds said the work explores the relationship between modern and historical life.
“Making connections between recent and ancient history suggests pondering the path we have travelled and our shared trajectories into the future. Connections between the personal and the social are also of interest. Questions about how humanity has changed – or not – might emerge from such contemplation,” he said.
“Similarly, the importance of the sea as an origin for western art and decoration, particularly the Aegean, and what the sea means to Queenslanders is a connection that draws the past closer to the present.
“As a child I saw no value in history but have come to see it as increasingly important. All of it.”
Mayor Troy Thompson said Council was proud to welcome the Museums & Galleries Queensland touring exhibition to Townsville.
“Council is continuously working towards developing a rich arts culture supported by world-class visual arts facilities, like North Queensland’s oldest art gallery Perc Tucker Regional Gallery,” Cr Thompson said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing How Soon Is Now? at the gallery and strongly encourage both residents and visitors to head along for this free arts experience.”
How Soon Is Now? will launch alongside John Nesirky’s The Recollection of Sound from 6pm on Friday 26 April, for more information, visit the What's On Townsville event listings for more information.
