Council delighted to welcome new Australian citizens

Council proudly welcomed 50 new Australian citizens at a special National Citizenship Day ceremony at the Palmetum on Sunday 17 September 2023.
Council holds a citizenship ceremony every month and Mayor Jenny Hill said it was her pleasure to lead these momentous occasions, with Townsville continuing as one of the fastest growing cities in northern Australia.
"Being a part of these ceremonies, which are such special occasions for our new citizens, is one of my favourite parts of being mayor," Cr Hill said.
This cohort of new citizens represented 21 different countries of origin, with all of them embracing their new Australian identity in the ceremony led by Cr Hill.
The new citizens had the opportunity to hear the Minister's message from the Department of Home Affairs before being warmly welcomed by the Mayor and taking the citizenship pledge.
They then united to sing the National Anthem, led by Magnetic Island vocal group Aquapella.
Each new citizen then received their citizenship certificates, Australian flags, and a native plant from the Mayor and councillors, symbolising the connection to their new homeland.
There was also a professional photographer on hand, with all new citizens to receive a copy of their photo with the Mayor in the coming weeks.
Aquapella also performed world music songs to entertain the new citizens and their families while they enjoyed refreshments with the Mayor and councillors.
“Our multicultural community in Townsville is a source of immense pride and creates a vibrant tapestry of culture and heritage,” Cr Hill said.
“These new citizens are proud to call Townsville home and they help make it a wonderful place to live.
“Council proudly supports diversity and inclusion in the community through events, such as Citizenship Ceremonies, activities and other programs. We recognise everyone’s diverse abilities, welcome multicultural diversity, support our youth and elderly and value Indigenous communities.”
