Spotlight on youth at Townsville Civic Theatre
Date published: 22 November 2023
Young people across Townsville have flexed their creative muscles at Townsville Civic Theatre throughout 2023 by gracing the stage in thirty-eight local youth performances and enjoying five touring productions.
The stunning array of performances ranges from RAVA Productions of The Wind in the Willows to Townsville Grammar School’s Little Shop of Horrors, giving young people in Townsville the opportunity to grow as young artists at a world-class performing arts space.
Ann Roberts School of Dance owner and director Jane Pirani said the whole school was buzzing with excitement ahead of its performances of Coppelia next week.
“Our students’ remarkable dedication has brought us immense pride as we prepare to showcase their talents,” Ms Pirani said.
“Our aim is to create unforgettable experiences for our students, nurturing their stage presence, fostering self-expression in the most creative ways, and leaving lasting impressions.
“Performing on one of Townsville's biggest stages is a tremendous privilege, allowing our students to spread their wings and build confidence. With a diverse age range, our older students shine in lead roles, inspiring the younger generation. The future looks bright, and being a part of shaping that future at Ann Roberts fills us with immense honour.”
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said she was consistently impressed by the high calibre of performances by Townsville’s primary and secondary school students.
“I’m always proud to see the hard work of Townsville locals in the arts space, particularly our young people who showcase just how skilled and hardworking our youth performers are,” Cr Greaney said.
“By the end of December we will have welcomed thirty-eight youth-oriented shows and productions alongside five touring performances for young people to enjoy. This huge number reflects the hard work and dedication Townsville’s youth have for the performing arts.
“Some of our upcoming bookings from schools include the Croft Gilchrist School of Dancing’s Tale of a Mermaid’s Tail – Quest for the Lost Pearl and Ann Roberts School of Dance’s Coppelia.
“I’m always so pleased to see our young performers on the big stage, and I know when the curtains open they’ll put on an unforgettable show.”
