Repairs start on sewer main

Townsville City Council is conducting essential repair to a section of sewer main on Thuringowa Drive.
The works start today and involve the renewal of an essential underground wastewater trunk pipeline which transports sewerage from Kirwan and surrounding areas to the Mount St John Sewerage Treatment Plant.
Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the works were part of Council’s ongoing commitment to providing reliable wastewater services to the Townsville community.
“As a Council we maintain more than $5 billion worth of community assets, including our water and wastewater networks. The wastewater network is essential infrastructure that allows wastewater from homes and businesses to be transported to centralised plants for treatment and disposal in accordance with regulated conditions,” Cr Rehbein said.
“Council has awarded these works to Townsville company KB Pipelines. We are pleased to have experienced local contractors available to perform these critical works for Council.
“To ensure the safety of the team on site and members of the public, we will close the footpath and have a partial lane closure of the left-hand turning lane on Thuringowa Drive into Charles Street. Council thanks the community for their patience as we get this important piece of work done.”
Townsville Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said wastewater management was an essential part of running a city.
“Treating wastewater is incredibly important to ensuring public and environmental health and we need to have a reliable wastewater network in order to transport and treat it. This is why Council continues to invest into critical water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the city as part of its focus on water security for our growing city,” Cr Cook said.
“Our population is growing fast and it’s essential for Council to continue updating its assets to ensure we’re able to cater for increasing demand.”
The Thuringowa Drive wastewater main pipeline renewal works are expected to take three weeks to complete, weather and project conditions permitting.
