Give a shout out to Townsville seniors

Seniors who are contributing to the Townsville community will be getting the thanks they deserve.
The 2023 Townsville City Council Senior Awards will recognise the city’s unsung over-65 heroes by publicly thanking them for their contribution to the city.
Mayor Jenny Hill said many of the city’s senior residents give their time, energy, knowledge, wisdom and skills as volunteers without seeking public recognition or accolades.
“The Council’s annual Senior Awards are one way we can say thank you,” Cr Hill said.
“Every day in Townsville there are countless older and retired residents volunteering their time, sharing their knowledge, coaching and guiding others and contributing to the wellbeing of our community.
“These seniors connect people and provide services to others with their wisdom, skill, commitment and energy.
“What they do is quite overwhelming, but their work often goes unnoticed, so the Senior Awards are about giving them the recognition and thanks they deserve.”
The are two categories - Male Senior of the Year and Female Senior of the Year – with all nominees and a guest invited to attend the Seniors Luncheon event on Thursday 24 August.
Winners will be presented with a framed certificate and gift from the Mayor, while all nominees will be acknowledged during the awards ceremony and presented with a certificate and plant.
Last year’s Senior Awards winners were Betty Sayce and Anthony Hallo who were recognised for their many years volunteering at Townsville University Hospital.
Townsville residents who know an amazing senior doing great things in our community can now say thank you by nominating them online.
Nominations for the Senior Awards close at 5pm on Sunday 30 July.
