Investing in the suburbs, investing in our neighbourhoods

Townsville City Council is furthering its commitment to investing across the length and breadth of Townsville, with $121.1 million of its 2023/24 Budget and Operational Plan allocated to Townsville’s suburbs.
More than two thirds of Council’s total capital spend will be invested outside of the inner city, which includes $12.4 million for the world-renowned Magnetic Island.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the budget reflected Council’s commitment to growing a vibrant city centred around inclusive and connected neighbourhoods.
“We’re proud to invest in building and maintaining our neighbourhoods to continue to improve the places we call home,” Cr Hill said.
“Our city is growing and it’s essential we continue to deliver our plan for a vibrant and connected community, catering to everyone from young families to retirees.
“With almost 50,000 families calling Townsville home, it’s essential we deliver on the infrastructure that matters most to them.
“That’s why in this budget we’re investing $4.1 million into playgrounds, including works at Thuringowa Park on Kern Brothers Drive, Sanctum Park on Sanctum Boulevard and Weir Park on River Park Drive.
“For the 2023/24 financial year we are investing $3.8 million of capital works into footpath and bikeway projects, $5.3 million into maintenance and replacement of public BBQs and park equipment and $62.5 million into keeping our open spaces maintained, clean and tidy for everyone to use.”
Cr Hill said investment into the suburbs was a priority for Council.
“We want every Townsville resident to feel like they belong and are proud to call this city their home, whether they’re in their home, in their neighbourhood, or exploring our region,” she said.
“At Council we’re doing the work to make that happen, continuing our work on all-access walking, jogging and bike paths connecting homes to community meeting points, making our facilities like our libraries more accessible, and delivering what our community tells us they value in their suburbs.
“We know that when people are happy in their neighbourhoods, it creates a happier and healthier community. That’s why Council is continuing its commitment to investing in this area.
“In this budget we’re going to be getting the job done city-wide, ensuring our suburbs are well looked after and our community is connected.”
