Townsville’s most popular swimming spot revealed
Date published: 20 January 2023
Riverway has been revealed as Townsville’s most popular swimming spot in 2022, with more than 185,000 people cooling off at the precinct’s lagoon.
Riverway pipped the Strand Water Park by just 4,000 swimmers, while Magnetic Island’s Horseshoe Bay and Alma Bay came in at a close third and fourth place with more than 112,000 yearly swimmers each.
Townsville City Council provides access to nine free public lagoons and beaches with lifeguard services and stinger nets.
Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the data showed just how popular swimming is across Townsville.
“Last year we had a total of 811,855 locals and visitors use our free public lagoons and our world-class beaches, proving that we’re a city that embraces and participates in sports and recreational activities,” Cr Soars said.
“The most popular month for swimming was January last year, which comes as no surprise considering how warm our summer months can be.
“Council supports the city’s love for the outdoors by contracting lifeguard services at these sites to enhance safety for swimmers.
“We always want locals and visitors to be as safe as possible when they’re in and around water, so make sure you supervise your children and loved ones.”
