Moby Dick story to soar in ISHMAEL at Townsville Civic Theatre
Date published: 9 August 2023
The classic tale of Moby Dick gets a stunning reimagining in Ishmael, which is coming to Townsville Civic Theatre on Wednesday, 16 August.
Presented by Townsville City Council and Dead Puppet Society, Ishmael see Herman Melville’s classic book reinvented for a new millennium as a contemporary space saga.
On the resource-depleted earth of a not-so-distant future, a young climate refugee named Ishmael is given the chance to build a new life, provided she can survive a voyage to the outer solar system aboard the MV Pequod under the command of the obsessive Captain Ahab.
Hailed by critics as ‘a new kind of storytelling’ and ‘unlike anything else hitting the stage’ during its world premiere at Brisbane Festival in 2021, Community and Cultural Development chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney was delighted Council was able to bring Ishmael to Townsville.
“This boundary pushing production melds live film making with live action, miniature sets, models and cutting-edge camera technology, puppetry and an original score to tell a captivating story about individual hope and collective redemption,” Cr Greaney said.
“Dead Puppet Society have done a fantastic job with Ishmael and as audiences watch the story unfold, they are able watch how it is made, live in front of their eyes.
“There will be a 10am and 7pm show on Wednesday, August 16 and I’d encourage everyone in Townsville to check out this one-of-a-kind show at our fantastic Townsville Civic Theatre.”
Council is committed to growing as a sustainable destination that embraces and participates in the arts, sports, events and recreational activities.
