Townsville an Easter holidays magnet
Date published: 5 April 2023
Townsville is again proving to be the destination of choice for regional visitors and those from further afield over Easter.
Accommodation bookings are in strong demand in iconic destinations like Magnetic Island with many visitors coming from as far as Mount Isa and Melbourne to enjoy the coastal vibe.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said there is a lot on to attract our neighbours from areas around Townsville as well as the Northwest.
“Easter is traditionally a period when we see a large number of visitors from other regional areas, particularly the west, because there is so much for them to experience,” Cr Hill said.
“We’re living up to our reputation as the events capital of the north and we expect another capacity crowd for the Cowboys v Dolphins game on Friday 7 April.”
“This is the first Townsville outing for the Dolphins, so the game is a perfect way to start the Easter long weekend.”
In addition to sport, Townsville has many family-friendly activities that won’t break the budget.
“All of our activities are available to residents and visitors, including 41 no cost or low-cost activities in the Council’s Easter School Holiday Guide,” Cr Hill said.
“Amongst the offerings in Council’s Holiday Guide are an Easter Treasure Trail, Aviary Antics at the Botanical Gardens, pottery classes, a ninja gym, comic book making and kitchen chemistry.
“Whether it’s a Youth Strength Conditioning Program to yoga, island tours, markets, musical theatre and dancing, it’s all happening in Townsville and on Magnetic Island.”
Mayor Hill said that Magnetic Island is a jewel in the crown for Townsville.
“In February, Magnetic Island was named in the top 40 most-loved destinations in the world in the Tourism Sentiment Index,” Cr Hill said.
“The island’s laidback, no-fuss lifestyle along with its beaches, hill-top forts, water sports and koalas make it a huge drawcard.”
Townsville was recently named as one of Australia’s ten most liveable cities with world-class facilities including the newly transformed Northern Beaches Leisure Centre.
“Regardless of where you’re staying while you’re in Townsville, you don’t have to go far to enjoy this great city,” Cr Hill said.
