Riverway lagoon closes for Riverway Library upgrades

Riverway’s upper lagoon will be closed for eight weeks as Hutchinson Builders make a cladding upgrade to Townsville City Council’s new Riverway Library.
The lagoon will be closed to allow workers to re-clad the outer walls of the building with cladding approved by the Queensland Government’s Safer Buildings.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the Queensland Government brought new regulations into effect in 2018 to ensure potentially-combustible cladding was registered with Safer Buildings.
“The old cladding on the Riverway Library building was potentially combustible and Council followed the appropriate steps to have it registered with Safer Buildings, however as we are undertaking works on the building, we have made the decision to remove the old cladding and install new, compliant cladding,” Cr Hill said.
“The new cladding is the most cost-effective, long-term option to help keep this building compliant with the Queensland Government’s standards.”
Cr Hill said the lower lagoon would still be open during this time.
“We are closing the upper lagoon as the building is re-cladded, however the lower lagoon will still be accessible for locals and visitors to enjoy,” she said.
“The works have been scheduled during the school term, meaning the upper lagoon will be back for full use by the time the Christmas school holidays are here.”
The upper Riverway lagoon will close on Tuesday 4 October until Wednesday 30 November 2022.
The Riverway Library is expected to open early next year.
