Time is running out to nominate local heroes for Townsville’s 2023 Australia Day Awards

Townsville residents have until 5pm, Wednesday, November 16 to nominate special people in our community who have gone above and beyond to help improve the lives of others.
Council’s 2023 Australia Day Awards will highlight the best of the best from our local community, with awards handed out across seven categories, headlined by the Citizen of the Year and the Young Citizen of the Year awards.
The other categories are the Arts and Culture Award, Community Volunteer Award, Senior Sports Award, Junior Sports Award and the Environmental Excellence and Sustainability Award.
Mayor Jenny Hill will present all the awards during a cocktail event the night before Australia Day celebrations next year and said she was looking forward to seeing the great work of Townsville’s residents recognised.
“This special person could be your neighbour, a friend, or someone you have come across through your local school, church, or community group,” she said.
“Whoever comes to mind, they are someone who works selflessly to help improve your life and the lives of others.”
Townsville’s current Citizen of the Year Doug Millican, who was recognised for his amazing work as President of North Queensland Legacy, said he couldn’t wait to see who would follow in his footsteps.
“On Australia Day, we celebrate our nation, its achievements, and most of all, its people,” Mr Millican said.
“To actually think that someone thought enough of me to nominate me for the award is what I thought was really special.”
