Historical horse sale yards inspire new city mural

Links to a historical horse sale yard have inspired Townsville’s newest street art piece on Flinders St West.
The 18m-long artwork by local artist Baret one. features three horses and colourful flora, paying homage to horses in a tropical setting.
Baret one. created the artwork concept after hearing about the old horseshoes previously found on the property and the current property owner’s strong interest in horses and their use in Townsville’s community.
“My design has been inspired by the owners like for horses and the discovery of historical horse shoes found on the property from nearby sale yards … my design is a contemporary tribute to horses,” he said.
“My colour choice has been made as to complement the other nearby commission (Prismatic) that was just completed.”
Equus and Prismatic the latest in a slew of colourful pieces painted across the city as part of Townsville’s Street Art Trail.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said Council was proud to support local artists through its Street Art Trail.
“Townsville is home to a huge array of talented artists, which is why we’re keen to engage them on projects across the city. By providing local jobs for local artists, we’re ensuring there’s worthwhile work for our homegrown talent,” Cr Greaney said.
“These works help grow Townsville as a sustainable destination that embraces the arts as an essential part of Townsville’s landscape. I know that tourists and locals both enjoy our remarkable Street Art Trail and I’m excited to see how Equus and Prismatic add to the experience.”
Equus and Prismatic will be officially launched on Friday November 18 at 6pm at the Aplin Street Carpark.
