Curtain rises on Festival of One-Act Plays

Short, sharp and showstopping performances will take over Townsville Civic Theatre this weekend for the Festival of One-Act Plays.
The festival is part of a long-term partnership between Townsville City Council and the Friends of the Theatre, giving local thespians, playwrights and directors the opportunity to bring their works to the stage.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said the festival was long-awaited.
“The Festival of One-Act Plays is always highly anticipated, and with the impacts of floods and COVID during the past three years it’ll be great to see the festival finally go ahead with renewed vigour this week,” Cr Greaney said.
“This festival is a great opportunity for groups and individuals to take to the stage and be critiqued on their performances by an industry professional, giving them valuable feedback to help grow their talent.
“It’s not just the acting in the spotlight, with feedback being provided on direction and writing too.”
Cr Greaney said this was a fun event to attend as a spectator.
“The beauty of one act plays is that they have to be very creative with how they tell their stories – that’s why each play is sure to pack a real punch,” she said.
“I’d definitely encourage locals who are interested in theatre or who just want to enjoy a series of one act plays to head along to one of the festival’s sessions on Friday or Saturday.”
The Festival of One-Act Plays runs from 6pm on Friday. Two sessions will be held on Saturday, the first starting at 1pm and the second starting at 6pm.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for concession card holders and $12.50 for children and school students.
