Buzz builds for eco film competition

Time is running out on an un-BEE-lievable opportunity for Townsville film makers as entries for The Buzz – Eco Fiesta Video Competition close tomorrow (Friday 20 May 2022).
Townsville City Council, in conjunction with the Townsville Beekeepers Association, is holding a short-film competition with up to $9,000 in cash to be won as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations for the Eco Fiesta on 4 and 5 June 2022.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said she had encouraged anyone with a professional camera to someone with a smart phone to submit an entry.
“The videos only need to be three minutes long and touch on the impact pollinators like bees, bats, possums and insects along with healthy soils have on our ecosystem,” Cr Greaney said.
“These videos are about celebrating pollinators and their valuable contribution to the environment.
“It is estimated that 65 per cent of all flowering plants and some seed plants require insects for pollination. This percentage is greater for economically-important crops that provide fruit, vegetables, textile-related fibres and medicinal products.
“I am really encouraging residents to get involved and submit an entry for screening at the Eco Fiesta early next month.”
Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the video competition was a first for the region’s premiere environmental festival.
“The Eco Fiesta has been running since 1992 and helps increase public awareness about environmental issues and how to increase sustainability at home and at work,” Cr Soars said.
“The weekend will include special guest speakers, an education hub with free workshops, live entertainment, food trucks, kids’ activities, market and exhibition stalls and free sprinkler swaps.
“There will also be a world record attempt of a dance language done by honeybees called the waggle dance.”
Entries for the The Buzz – Eco Fiesta Video Competition need to be in this Friday, on World Bee Day, and the winners will be announced at the Eco Fiesta held on 4 and 5 June 2022 at Anderson Gardens.
