Eco Fiesta celebrates its 30th birthday this weekend

Waggle your way towards a world record this weekend as the 30th annual Eco Fiesta takes over Anderson Gardens for two massive days.
Eco Fiesta will be a hive of activity as guest speakers, community groups and entertainers focus on sharing insights into sustainability with a focus on the benefits of bees in our environment.
Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said families and friends could not miss the waggle dance world record attempt at Eco Fiesta, which would bring the crowd together to recreate a famous honeybee dance move.
“Eco Fiesta is focused on all things bees this year, so we’ve decided to get a hive of people together to do what honeybees do best – dance! We’re aiming to break a world record for most people waggle dancing at once on Sunday, so be sure to pop down and get your groove on,” Cr Soars said.
“We want to see hundreds of people teaming up and waggling away so we can secure this world record as a city.”
Cr Soars said outside of the waggle dance world record attempt there would be a myriad of things to see and do across the two-day event.
“Eco Fiesta kicks off at 4:30pm on Saturday at Anderson Gardens for entertainment leading up to the screening of The Buzz, a video competition which will celebrate all of the important work pollinators do in our environment,” Cr Soars said.
“The winners will be announced at 8pm after the winning videos are screened. This will be a great night out for the whole family with free entertainment under the stars, great food from Pop Up Food Trucks and free popcorn for the kids.
“Day two will kick off from 9am, so be sure to get in early to get a good car park and pick up some breakfast at the gardens before making the most of the activities offered throughout the event, including entertainment, guest speakers, a free sprinkler swap, thousands of native bees to learn about, and a birthday cake cutting to celebrate Eco Fiesta’s 30th year.
“This is an event not to be missed, so make sure you head down to this great free community event and learn more about the small steps you can take toward a sustainable Townsville.”
Eco Fiesta runs from 4:30pm on Saturday and from 9am on Sunday at Anderson Gardens.
