Remediation work on Magnetic Island road to start soon

Townsville City Council has contracted local business Mendi Group to undertake repairs on about 5km of West Point Road on Magnetic Island which was damaged during last year’s wet season.
More than $625,000 has been provided through the Australian and Queensland governments’ jointly-funded Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to carry out the works.
Mayor Jenny Hill said Mendi would be resheeting the road to improve its safety and usability for motorists.
“Mendi Group will be applying a new layer of gravel on top of the existing surface along West Point Road to improve the surface for motorists,” Cr Hill said.
“The resheeting work will also make the road more resilient to future weather events, allowing locals to continue travelling along West Point Road.”
Council Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the repairs would restore the road to a safe condition for motorists and provide ongoing safe travel conditions while work continued on the long-term West Point Road Maintenance Strategy.
“This community-shaped strategy is still being developed by Council and, once implemented, will act as the standard for maintaining the road into the future,” Cr Rehbein said.
Works will start next month and are expected to take around two weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Motorists can expect traffic delays and are urged to obey signage and traffic management.
