Celebrate sport, arts and culture in Townsville’s CBD tomorrow
Date published: 22 April 2022
Scenes of crowds celebrating arts and culture along Flinders St tomorrow are set to rival Manet and Renoir’s best works.
Thousands of revellers are expected to turn out to the Townsville Eats – Party and Portraits event honouring the opening of The Percivals 2022 and the announcement of the prestigious arts prize winners.
The event will be headlined by Kingswood, with local support acts The Money Shots and The Mick & J Experiment.
Mayor Jenny Hill said Council was committed to activating city spaces to boost business for local traders and provide free entertainment for locals.
“Townsville Eats has been a wildly successful series of events since it started in 2019. Businesses from food trucks to AV companies to cafes and restaurants all benefit from the flow of foot traffic generated at each Townsville Eats,” Cr Hill said.
“This month alone, we’ve already hosted two extremely successful Townsville Eats in Central Park, with 16,000 people attending the events combined.
“We want to continue that success through bringing this weekend’s Townsville Eats to Flinders St, giving cafes, restaurants and retailers the opportunity to throw their doors open to the thousands of people expected at the event on Saturday.”
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said Townsville Eats would be celebrating the launch of The Percivals 2022 as well as the Cowboys v Titans game.
“We have so much to rally around in Townsville. As the arts and culture capital of Northern Australia, we are perfectly positioned to host world-class sport as well as prestigious art competitions,” Cr Greaney said.
“I’d encourage anyone with some free time to head down to Flinders St from 3pm on Saturday to enjoy the hustle and bustle and to rock out at the free Kingswood concert.
“The winners of The Percivals will be announced and broadcast live on the big screen outside the gallery from 6:30pm, and the doors will be open to members of the public who have registered a free ticket from 7:30pm.
“With live entertainment, food and drinks, roving entertainment, The Percivals launch and so much more, there really is no reason to miss this action-packed event.”
