Microchipping the corg-key to responsible pet ownership

Townsville City Council is encouraging local pet owners to book their paw-fect pal in to get chipped at Council’s free microchipping day this Wednesday.

The free microchipping days have proven extremely popular in the past, so much so Council has extended its monthly microchipping days until the end of the year.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said it was all about encouraging responsible pet ownership within the Townsville community.

“Microchips are a vital part of being a responsible pet owner and it is great to see the community taking up the offer of a free microchip for their furry friends,” Cr Soars said.

Of the more than 32,500 registered dogs in Townsville, just over 10,000 are microchipped, whereas of the approximately 4,700 approved cats, more than 3,500 are microchipped.

“Alongside ensuring your pet is registered, making sure your cat or dog is microchipped helps to make sure your pet can be reunited if it escapes or is picked up by our animal compliance officers.

“The best part is, since Council has introduced our free microchipping days we have seen far more people reunited with their pets, which is the ultimate goal and a fantastic outcome.”

Each event will run from 9am until 2pm at Townsville’s Animal Care and Adoption Centre (ACAC) on Tompkins Road, Shaw, with one event held every month.

“It’s great we have been able to continue the program to the benefit of pets and their owners for the rest of this year,” Cr Soars said.

“The only criteria for anyone wanting to get a free microchip is that their dogs must be registered, or cats approved with Council before booking.

“This is a free event pet owners would be barking-mad to miss out on.”

To book an appointment, residents must call Council on 13 48 10.
