Tender opens for new library at Riverway
Date published: 31 December 2021
The relocation of the Thuringowa Library to its new home at Riverway has reached a new milestone with Townsville City Council calling for tenders from suitably-qualified contractors to undertake the project.
Townsville Acting Mayor and Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said the proposed library's design had been developed following extensive consultation with the community.
“Feedback from the community has helped shape how this library will look and how it will function,” Cr Greaney said.
“Regular users of the Thuringowa Library have told us they want a fit-for-purpose and inclusive space with access to 24-hour return and reservation pickups as well as other community spaces.
“It will complement some of the fantastic existing facilities at Riverway like the sports field, public swimming lagoon and art gallery. Moving the library to Riverway will really cement the precinct’s reputation as Townsville’s premier community space.”
“We want to ensure the library will meet the community expectations now and into the future.”
The new Riverway Library was a commitment made by Council in this year’s budget, with Council allocating $5.5 million to the project for the 2021-2022 financial year.
Construction of the new library is scheduled to start in March next year, and Cr Greaney has called on local businesses to tender on the works.
“Council is committed to supporting local businesses,” Cr Greaney said.
"One of our goals is to achieve 90 per cent of our procurement spend with Townsville-based businesses within the next five years.
“I encourage suitably-qualified local businesses to submit a tender,” Cr Greaney said.
