Ring in the new year with Council’s family-friendly celebrations
Date published: 22 December 2021
Welcome 2022 with a fun-filled night out for the whole family on New Year’s Eve.
Townsville City Council is bringing the festivities to three locations to usher in the new year – Riverway Stadium, Strand Park and Nelly Bay.
Acting Mayor Mark Molachino said the night was planned for young families and night owls to enjoy.
“Riverway will be where all the early action is, with a free screening of Dora and the Lost City of Gold, gates openfrom 5pm, as well as food trucks and family-friendly fireworks at 8pm,” Cr Molachino said.
“Families wanting to make the most of this event should bring a picnic rug or camping chairs to sit on so they’re comfortable from the start of the movie to the moment the 8pm fireworks light up the sky.
“Over at Strand Park we’ll have fireworks at 8pm, so this is also a great spot for families with little ones who want to count down to the new year but be in bed before midnight.
“As the clock ticks over to 2022 there will be a midnight fireworks spectacular that can be enjoyed from The Strand and Nelly Bay.”
Cr Molachino said it was important that everyone attending the events remembered to be COVID-safe.
“New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, so we don’t want anyone getting sick during these events,” he said.
“Remember to stay 1.5m away from others and keep your personal hygiene up by having washed or sanitised hands. Please stay home if you’re sick.”
