Fireworks not so thrilling for pets
Date published: 29 December 2021
The excitement of New Year’s Eve is fun for most Townsville locals, however there are a few tips and tricks to help keep your furry friends secure as fireworks light up the skies on 31 December.
Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said there were a few handy hints for pet owners who wanted to keep their animals safe.
“Firework shows are thrilling for people but they can be frightening for pets. If you can, bring your pet inside during firework shows so they feel safer and aren’t able to easily run away,” Cr Soars said.
“Making a crate available for your dog is a good idea if they’re crate-trained, otherwise make a small room like a bathroom or the laundry available for them to spend time in. Dogs tend to feel more secure in smaller spaces.
“And most importantly, be a calm influence on your dog. Your dog looks up to you and will likely follow your cues, so if you play it cool your dog is likely to relax.”
Firework shows will be visible from Riverway and Strand Park at 8pm and at Strand Park and Nelly Bay at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
