Townsville City Council’s proposed new corporate plan has received the enthusiastic backing of the community.
Council has been engaging with the community on the new plan through its Have Your Say Townsville platform for the past four weeks.
The new corporate plan, which would inform Council’s operations in serving the community during the next five years, aims to grow Townsville into a globally-connected community driven by innovation and lifestyle.
The corporate plan is based on excellence of services to the community and focused on five key goals:
- a city that connects you to what you need at the time you choose
- a circular economy that advances business and moves towards zero waste
- the hub for modern industry
- a sustainable destination that embraces and participates in the arts, sports, events and recreational activities
- a leading centre of education, training and research commercialisation.
Mayor Jenny Hill said support for goals reached as high as 79 per cent.
“The Townsville community has been at the centre of the development of Council’s new corporate plan,” Cr Hill said.
“Council undertook a liveability study across the entire local government area in October 2020 to ensure residents and their values, aspirations and ideas were fully understood and incorporated into the plan.
“Similarly, we have been engaging with industry and community groups to get their ideas and feedback.
“Some 3500 residents visited the Have Your Say Townsville website during the four-week consultation period.
“This demonstrates the community is just as keen to see our city progress as much as Council is.”
Cr Hill said positioning the city as a hub for modern industry and a specialist leader in research and simulation would create more jobs across a wider range of industries.
“We want to attract the jobs of the future to Townsville now to ensure our city has a prosperous future and the goals in this plan reflect that,” she said.
