Kerbside collection trucking along
Date published: 23 September 2020
More than 1,000 properties have had their rubbish collected as part of Townsville City Council’s kerbside collection.
Kerbside collection was relaunched at the start of the month using a booking system after COVID-19 delayed the annual program.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said more than 4,800 properties had booked in for collection.
“Council opened bookings for kerbside collection last month and collections began at the start of September – since then we’ve had more than 4,800 properties book in and our staff have visited more than 1,000 of these,” Cr Hill said.
“Our crews have picked up 132 tonnes of waste since the program began and the most common items we’re seeing left on the kerb are mattresses and barbecues.
“The trucks are visiting each division on a fortnightly basis and some divisions are booked out pretty far in advance so there is a wait for some residents looking to book in.”
Cr Hill reminded residents that there are restrictions on items and how much waste can be collected by crews.
“It’s important that residents double check our website for what items can and can’t be collected by our staff,” she said.
“Items like tyres, glass, gas canisters, and green waste aren’t able to be collected and residents should only be placing up to 2 cubic metres of waste on their kerb.”
All residential properties are eligible to book for kerbside collection once per year, with recyclable and green waste free to take to Council’s waste facilities year round.
