Residents urged to nominate local heroes for Australia Day Awards
Date published: 8 October 2020
Nominations are open now for the 2021 Australia Day Awards and Townsville City Council is looking for the city’s incredible local heroes.
Townsville’s local heroes go above and beyond to help improve the lives of others and there are seven categories they can be nominated for, with winners announced at the Australia Day celebrations.
Mayor Jenny Hill said now more than ever it is important to acknowledge all the people behind the scenes keeping Townsville ticking.
“2020 has been anything but a normal year, and for Townsville the pandemic has followed a devastating natural disaster that has given little space for our community to breath,” Cr Hill said.
“That’s why I think it’s incredibly important that we take stock in celebrations like Australia Day and the Australia Day Awards and acknowledge those in our city that despite all of the hardship, still commit themselves to helping others.
“I urge everyone to nominate someone they know that has contributed to making Townsville the amazing place it is – whether it be a community organisation that has helped you or someone you know – through to individuals that give their time to volunteer or push limits to achieve great things.
“This is a way we can bring the new year in with some positivity and celebrate all of the good happening in our community.”
Nominations for the Australia Day Awards are open now and close on 30 November.
The seven categories are:
- Citizen of the Year,
- Young Citizen of the Year,
- Arts and Culture Award,
- Community Volunteer Award,
- Senior Sports Award,
- Junior Sports Award; and
- Environmental Excellence and Sustainability Award
