Date published: 18 May 2020
The green flag has dropped on the countdown to the 2020 Townsville 400 with V8 Supercar Championship organisers announcing that the event will now be held on August 29-30.
Mayor Jenny Hill welcomed the announcement of the new date, adding that Council had been working hard to maintain the relationship and event for the city.
“The Townsville 400 is a fantastic event, not only for motorsport fans but for the city generally and I am delighted that V8 Supercars have found a spot for it in their schedule in 2020,” Cr Hill said.
“With many local businesses hurting because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the economic boost that the event will provide will be very welcome.
“This event will also provide a great showcase for our city as it is telecast into living rooms across the country and an important boost to community spirit, which has also taken a hit because of the pandemic.”
In past years, the Townsville 400 has injected around $36 million and more than 120,000 visitor nights into the local economy.
“While we are not yet certain if COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted for the event to attract the visitation we have experienced in previous years, we are working through ways to ensure that Townsville 400 delivers for locals and showcases the best of our city ,” Cr Hill said.
“Council will continue to work with V8 Supercars and other stakeholders to ensure the race takes place on the new date.”
