Tender awarded for upgrade to Horseshoe Bay Treatment Plant

Townsville City Council will invest more than $900,000 to upgrade the odour control unit and undertake remediation works at the Horseshoe Bay Treatment Plant.
Last Tuesday’s full council meeting awarded the tender for the project to RPC Technologies.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the project would support up to 30 jobs, including local electrical and civil contractors.
“This is a highly specialised project with no local suppliers available, so the evaluation considered not only the best value for money for the ratepayers, but also the engagement of local subcontractors where possible,” Cr Hill said.
“This project will provide RPC and their subcontractors substantial work over 6 months which is one way Council can support our local businesses during any downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The odour control unit supresses any unpleasant smells coming from the treatment plant and is an essential component.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said RPC Technologies has a proven track-record delivering projects of a similar scale.
“Odour control is a significant component of managing our wastewater treatment plants and is crucial to meeting our environmental regulations,” Cr Cook said.
“RPC Technologies have delivered similar projects across Australia and understand the intricacies and the technology required to upgrade our plant in Horseshoe Bay.
“The technology that RPC will be using is a bio-trickling filter to break down the odour causing pollutants and is an eco-friendly option.”
