Townsville City Council has responded to a request to honour late Townsville resident Rosemary Russo who was tragically killed in 2016.
A dedicated park bench and plaque will be added to Deeragun’s Innes Park to honour her memory.
Ms Russo lived in the area that surrounds Innes Park for more than 20 years and was killed in her home.
Deputy Mayor Mark Molachino said Council had consulted with the public before reaching this decision.
“Consultation on renaming the Innes Park after the late Ms Rosemary Russo was open during February and March, however feedback from the community was that the park should remain Innes Park as it was already named for a former resident,” Cr Molachino said.
“But there was also a lot of support to commemorate Ms Russo’s life in a different way, with a commemorative park seat with a plaque to honour her memory.”
Cr Molachino said the addition to the park would help Ms Russo be remembered for many years to come.
“Ms Russo ran a children’s day care service at her home and often visited Innes Park with the children. I hope that families will continue to take their children to Innes Park and to take a moment to remember Ms Russo when they see this new park seat dedicated to her memory,” he said.
The park seat and plaque will be installed in consultation with Ms Russo’s family, and will be installed in the next few months.
