Controlled burns taking place throughout July and August

Townsville City Council is conducting controlled burns across the region throughout July and August.
The burns are part of a proactive strategy expected to mitigate the risk of bushfires throughout summer by reducing potential fuel loads across the city.
Community Safety and Environment Committee chairperson Margie Ryder said the controlled burns are essential to protect the community during the bushfire season.
“Council works with several partners including Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and State Government departments to conduct burns across the city to prepare for the bushfire season,” Cr Ryder said.
“So far, Council has already conducted burns on part of Castle Hill, Mount Louisa and Mount Stuart, and over the next few weeks, we will do another burn on Castle Hill, a burn in Kelso and one out at Hervey’s Range.
“It’s really important that residents in the affected areas follow instructions given by Council and QFES staff at all times while these burns are being conducted.
“There may be closures to walking trails or pathways while Council undertakes these burns – particularly on Castle Hill – and we’d like to thank the community for their patience while we work to get this work completed.”
Residents with medical conditions who may be affected by smoke from grass fires are encouraged to take precautions in case smoky conditions affect them during this time.
