Committee recommends development application for motel expansion in Wulguru

Townsville City Council’s Planning and Development Committee has recommended to approve a development application to expand a motel in Wulguru.
The Material Change of Use (MCU) was submitted to extend the motel on Stuart Drive by an additional 12 units.
Planning and Development Committee chairperson Les Walker said it’s encouraging to see an already established motel looking to expand.
“Council gave an initial approval for this motel back in 1981 and there is currently unused land on the lot where some of the initially proposed units were never built,” Cr Walker said.
“It’s encouraging to see that this space is looking to be used and that there is an appetite to expand this accommodation for another 12 units.”
The development application received two public submissions and Cr Walker said conditions had been included to address these issues.
“This includes changes to the initial design to manage the privacy of neighbouring residents which was the main concern raised in the public submissions,” Cr Walker said.
The application will go to Full Council for consideration on 28 July and if endorsed, will require further construction approvals before the development can begin.
