Call for nominations for Seniors Awards

Do you know a senior deserving of recognition for their contributions to the community?
Townsville City Council is looking for nominations for the 2020 Seniors Awards, which will be presented during Seniors Week in August.
Deputy Mayor Mark Molachino said Council was looking for family members and friends to say thank you to the seniors in their life.
“Seniors Week and the Senior of the Year Awards are our chance to acknowledge and recognise the important role our senior community members play, often quietly, to keep our city running,” Cr Molachino said.
“Seniors play such a valuable role in our community, often giving their time to community and sporting groups and organisations without any expectation of recognition, but even a nomination is just one way we can say thanks for their tireless work.”
Cr Molachino said this year’s Seniors Week will look a little different due to COVID-19 restrictions but is more important than ever.
“This year Council won’t be able to hold the annual Seniors Luncheon and Expo due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that doesn’t stop us from celebrating together,” he said.
“COVID-19 has disrupted many facets of everyone’s lives and our senior population are some of the most vulnerable, so it’s important that we do everything we can to protect them.
“But we still want to acknowledge the remarkable seniors in our community, and we can do that by still holding the Senior of the Year awards.
“Council is asking all residents to think about the seniors in their lives and to share with the city all of the amazing things they do.”
Nominations for the Senior of the Year awards are open now and will close at 5pm, Sunday 2 August.
