Date published: 24 January 2020
Celebrate Australia Day the Townsville way this Sunday with plenty of fun activities for the whole family to take part in.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said there were two great events on for people celebrating Australia Day in Townsville.
“In the morning we have our main Australia Day ceremonies, which includes a fun run, a free Aussie breakfast, the Australia Day Awards Ceremony, the State Flag Raising ceremony and a citizenship ceremony,” Cr Hill said.
“The Australia Day ceremony at Jezzine Barracks is a great event for the whole family and is a great way for locals and visitors to the city to enjoy Australia Day.”
Cr Hill said the festivities didn’t stop there, with more activities planned for the rest of the day.
“When the Australia Day formalities finish about midday, Great Australian Bites starts at Strand Park and along the foreshore,” she said.
“This will include a multicultural food court, a kite display along the ocean front, live entertainment, free amusements and a licensed bar area.”
Cr Hill said Australia Day was an important day for the Townsville community to come together and celebrate all the things that brought locals together.
“Council is committed to making Townsville even more vibrant by supporting the community’s participation in great cultural activities like these,” she said.
“Council would like to thank the State Government for its support of Australia Day in Townsville.”
Road closures will be in place within the Jezzine Barracks precinct from 5am to 12.30pm on Australia Day.
