New Reid Park bridge achieves key milestone

The new Reid Park Active Transport Bridge has achieved a key milestone today with the first of three structural components lifted into position.
The $7.4 million bridge, which will link Reid Park to the new Queensland Country Bank Stadium and the Waterfront Priority Development Area, is on-track to be completed in time to be used for the Elton John Concert on February 29.
Mayor Jenny Hill said she was thrilled to see the progress being made on the bridge’s construction.
“The Reid Park Active Transport Bridge is great news for our community as it will ensure locals and visitors alike can get to the stadium, or into the CBD or to the Civic Theatre quickly and easily,” Cr Hill said.
“It’s another important piece of infrastructure not only for the stadium but for the wider community.
“I am sure that, once complete, it will prove very popular not only for those accessing the stadium but the wider community as well.”
Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the bridge would ensure people could access the stadium, waterfront area and CBD safely and quickly.
“The new bridge will allow people to park at Reid Park, or travel to the area by public transport, and then walk over the rail line to the stadium,” Mr Stewart said.
“They’ll also be able to access surrounding entertainment and dining precincts within the Townsville City Waterfront Priority Development Area.
“Building active transport infrastructure like this, which will be wheelchair compliant, also encourages more people to walk or ride to and from the Townsville CBD area and this means healthier, more active Queenslanders.”
Townsville City Council is delivering the Reid Park Active Transport Bridge project in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The project is funded under the Queensland’s Government’s $40 million Growth Area and Regional Infrastructure Investment Fund (GARIIF), which is delivering new infrastructure, or improving existing facilities, to enhance liveability in areas experiencing growth.
