MCU approved for new unit complex in the CBD

Townsville City Council has given the go-ahead for a new unit complex in the CBD.
The Material Change of Use (MCU) was approved in the Full Council meeting today, however further development approvals will be needed before construction can begin.
The development – located on the corner of Stokes Street and Hale Street – is proposed to include 39 units and 82 parking spaces.
Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the development is a great step forward for the city and bringing people into the CBD.
“It’s fantastic to see applications for developments of residential units, especially on the periphery of the CBD because it speaks to of a growing confidence in the growth of our economy and population,” Cr Walker said.
Cr Walker said the development would be subject to conditions to minimise any impacts to nearby residents.
“The proposed unit complex is above the height limit for this precinct by one storey, but the proposal would have minimal impact on most of the neighbouring residents and the view of Castle Hill.
“We’ve also made sure to include conditions around traffic management and geotechnical certifications to address safety concerns from community members.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the location of the units is a fantastic opportunity for the CBD.
“An additional 39 units in such close proximity to the CBD can only spell good news for our local businesses operating within the area,” Cr Greaney said.
“It’s such a fantastic location and living in the city provides such a great lifestyle with Castle Hill and The Strand so close by.
“There is also access to a variety of grocery stores, amazing boutique shops and local markets so it really will be a fantastic place for residents to live.”
