Council staff respond to fish kill
Date published: 7 December 2020
Townsville City Council staff are responding to a small fish kill at the freshwater lake opposite Waterside Place in Idalia.
Fish kills are common in tropical wetlands in Australia where high temperatures and lowering water levels increase the occurrence of algal blooms.
Residents should avoid contact with the water and not consume any fish caught from the lake. The fish removed from the lake will be converted into soil.
Signs have been erected around the lake to inform residents, the Department of Environment and Science (DES) has been notified, and Council staff will continue to monitor the situation.
