Tobruk Pool redevelopment close to completion

Like a champion swimmer who has just made the final turn, the $11.3 million redevelopment of the Tobruk Memorial Baths on The Strand is racing towards the finish line.
Inspecting the project today, Mayor Jenny Hill said she was pleased to see the work progressing well.
“Workers are making great progress on this exciting redevelopment,” Cr Hill said.
“The toddler and learn-to-swim pools are now fully tiled and the 50 metre pool should be completed in the coming weeks.
“Installation of the pool filtration system is also in its final stages, with pressure testing of the pipework currently underway.
“They’re also installing the shade sails that will protect swimmers from the sun.”
Townsville City Council Infrastructure Committee Chair, Cr Mark Molachino, said the redeveloped baths would feature new 50 metre, learn-to-swim and toddler pools, as well as an updated filtration system, new shade structure and refurbished facilities.
“Not only is this project delivering a fantastic new swimming facility for our community, it is helping to drive the local economy, which is so important at the moment,” Cr Molachino said.
“The project is being undertaken by local contractor Jackson+Semler and is expected to have supported more than 120 jobs by its completion.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said she, like the rest of the community, was eagerly awaiting the re-opening of the much-loved facility.
“The Tobruk Memorial Baths have been an important part of the Townsville community for more than 60 years,” Cr Greaney said.
“Hopefully the completion of the project will coincide with the lifting of COVID-19-related restrictions and members of the public will be able to get back to using the facility again.
